Drone/Unmanned Aircraft

Drone/Unmanned Aircraft

Drones made headline news in 2017 when the owner of an aerial photography business in Washington was sentenced to 30 days in jail after the drone he was operating knocked a woman unconscious.

While it is believed to be the first incident of this type resulting in jail time, this situation highlights the uncharted territory regarding guidelines and rules for drone usage. Growth projections for the drone sector will reach new heights by 2020:

  • The FAA estimates 7 million drones will fly US skies.
  • The drone commercial market is expected to reach $1.27 billion.

It is no doubt that commercial drones will provide exciting opportunities for the engineering industry. As with any new opportunities created by advances in technology, they go hand in hand with a set of new and little-understood risks and exposures.
